BioChem Solutions has established a development alliance with the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), a state institution created in 1979 to conduct health-sciences research and apply results toward improving wellness and healthcare delivery throughout that nation. BioChem Soloutions and KEMRI developed a professional relationship in recent years to conduct early trials of products Alphamir and Arthromir. Dr. Davy Kiprotich Koech, one the world's most renowned medical researchers, serves as KEMRI's chief executive.
KEMRI, located in Nairobi, will be the leading medical institution in Phase 3 clinical trials of those medicines, making Dr. Koech and his staff the cornerstone of BioChem Solutions' development program.
Prior to KEMRI's establishment in November 1979, health research in Kenya was conducted under the auspices of the East African Medical Research Council, which was founded in 1957. Following the break-up of the East African Community in 1977, the Kenyan Parliament approved the Science and Technology Act to provide for the establishment of national research institutes. Pursuant to the Act, KEMRI's official mandates are:
- To conduct research in human health;
- To cooperate with other organizations and institutions of higher learning in training programs and on matters of relevant research;
- To liaise with other relevant bodies within and outside Kenya carrying out similar research and related activities;
- To disseminate and translate research findings for evidence-based policy formulation and implementation;
- To cooperate with the Ministry of Health, the National Council for Science and Technology and the Medical Science Advisory Committee on matters pertaining toresearch policies and priorities; and
- To do all such things as appear necessary, desirable or expedient to carry out its functions.
In May 2007, KEMRI received the highest recognition in quality scientific research and excellence in management at the International Quality Summit Awards ceremony held in New York City. Judges awarded KEMRI the top gold award at the annual convention attended by international businesspersons, diplomats, scientists and professionals from around the world.
Accepting the award "with great humility and excitement," Dr. Koech stated: "It is a rare opportunity for KEMRI to be recognized and singled out from among a galaxy of international organizations. Our motivation has always been doing the very best whenever we can. This award is a great motivation to our staff to rededicate to even better service."
Dr. Koech, KEMRI's chief executive for nearly two decades, long has been recognized throughout Africa and the rest of the world for his passionate commitment to medical research. He holds three doctorate degrees: Doctor of Science from Moi University, a Cultural Doctorate in therapeutic philosophy from the World University in the United States, and a Ph.D. in medical pathology, specializing in immunology, awarded by the University of Nairobi but partially completed at the Harvard University Medical School while he was a Fulbright-Hays scholar. Additionally, Dr. Koech holds a master's degree in pharmacology from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and a bachelor of science degree from the University of Nairobi.
